Fragonard
Designer History
Fragonard was founded in 1926 by a perfumer named Eugene Fuchs in Grasse, the French town renowned as the perfume capital of the world since the 18th century. Home to some of the oldest perfumeries in the business, Grasse’s climate is ideal for growing delicate flowers that are some of the most in demand natural perfume ingredients. Fuchs named his company as a tribute to the famous Fragonard family of Grasse, which included 18th century perfumer and glove-maker Francoise Fragonard and his son, the famous Rococo painter Jean-Honore Fragonard.
Designer Perfume History
The quintessential French fragrance house, now offers 35 distinct fragrances, which it categorizes as fruits, florals, naturals, and Orientals. One of its oldest fragrances, which remains one of the brand’s strongest sellers, is Zizanie for men. Developed in 1932, this masculine scent features a rich blend of patchouli and sandalwood. Other popular men’s fragrances include Eau Frivole and Santal Fragonard and popular women’s fragrances include Lune De Miel, Reve Indien, Capucine, Emilie, Soleil, a potent blend of jasmine, lily and rose, and the recently released Bille Doux, a tribute to the classic perfumerie flowers of the French Riviera featuring Sweet William carnation, peony, and frangipani.
The company remains a highly traditional and relatively small fragrance brand, now run by Françoise, Anne and Agnes Costa, the great-granddaughters of its founder. The company is still based out of several factories in and around Grasse, where it also produces soaps, cosmetics and other scented body-care products, all using time-honored perfumery techniques. Fragonard also runs several museums, some of which display the antique clothing and jewelry of the Fuchs family, others of which celebrate the history and technique of perfume making they employ. There are also several Fragonard boutiques, centered around Grasse, featuring a Fragonard “fragrance bookshop” and ornately embroidered clothing, linen, antiques, and handcrafted houseware and jewelry that showcase the brand’s passion for traditional elegance and decadence. Today, the company’s fragrance lines are distributed in 20 countries around the globe.
